Now this is a new concept, or not. I remember when I was a little kid (circa 1980s), and my father had a little garden planted in the front of our house; it was a small strip, just enough for tomatoes, lots of them (I guess that means he had a green thumb of sorts, that or tomatoes can grow under the worst of circumstances). And he had cucumbers too, and I am sure other vegetables… but I remember those tomatoes. And I remember waiting for the green ones to turn red. And I don’t even think that I liked tomatoes back then either.
Anyway, fast forward to 2014.. I just might have a green thumb! Or maybe I should give the credit to my husband, who literally waters our herbs several times a day, even though we have a drip system in place. 🙂 We (I should say “he”- my husband) started with herbs like rosemary, basil, parsley, mint, oregano, cilantro and cactus (kidding about the cactus, but I planted a cactus 3 yrs ago and it is taking over, a mutant cactus now!). We had a few pepper plants and a strawberry plant, but seems that the lizards look at them as real treats! And I would like to take credit for our lemon and orange trees, however I cannot… They are property of our neighbors, yet the trees hang low into our yard… YES! So lately we have moved into lemongrass, thyme, echinacea, kale, spinach, cucumbers, tomatoes and a peach tree! Yes, a peach tree (another idea of the hubby- I just LOVE his ideas).
Okay I am saying all of this because seriously I have ZERO gardening skills, yet my husband and I have managed quite a nice little garden. And we have needed a little help from the resources that I am going to provide you with.
And well, I can’t say enough about growing your own garden these days. So much of our food supply has been tainted with chemicals, additives, pesticides, and heavy metals. As if this isn’t bad enough, our food is now being genetically modified… in a lab… FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION… and the FDA says it’s OKAY!
Just think, if you follow a balanced nutrition plan, 60-70% or more of your diet should be coming from fruits and vegetables. Growing your own will not only cut down on the toxicity you are likely ingesting, your pocketbook will thank you too!
Okay so I am going to list out the steps to follow, well the steps that we followed, and I hope this will encourage your green thumb as well!
- We started with this guy: The Garden Guy and then we bought his book: Extreme Gardening: How to Grow Organic in the Hostile Deserts (Now we live in AZ, so this helped us)
- For those of you elsewhere, go here and look for your “growing zone.”
- Once you know your growing zone, look here for the monthly planting schedules.
- Once you know what can grow, when, and where you live, then purchase your seeds. I have done my due diligence and researched for non-GMO/organic seeds, and this website has the best seeds and the best deals, by far: SeedsNow (I am not an affiliate, I just LOVE them, and their customer service is AMAZING)
- Now if you are confused about what to do next, A Beginner’s Guide to Organic Gardening will help you to seal the deal. I didn’t know exactly what “sowing seeds” meant until after I read this 🙂
- And then we decided that buying organic soil was for the birds, so we looked into composting: This is FREE – Organic Gardener’s Composting (living in AZ, our ground is pretty tough, so we use “raised beds” (I didn’t know what this was either). More tips on raised beds here.
- And the composter that we purchased: Worm Factory 360 WF360B Worm Composter, Black, and with a composter comes the worms that we purchased: Uncle Jim’s Worm Farm 2000 Count Red Wiggler Worms
- Seriously, it is this easy to grow your own. Your body and your family will thank you, I promise. And what I will say about gardening – I am having a blast with my little 2 yr old daughter. She is learning where her food comes from, she is outside in the sunshine, and spending time together is priceless! 🙂
